I've been here before.. oh yeah, last year, same peg! A MFS match at Rookery Waters in Pidley that is turning into an annual event. This is the second year we have descended on the little village of Pidley. I got to the Mad Cat Pub for our breakfast around 7:30am to be greeted by a few of the lads, most who had traveled up the day before and camped in Neilio's back garden or sourced a local hotel.  I obviously missed a good night as there were a few bleary eyes and croaky voices... A quick breakfast in the pub and the short drive to the fishery.  Rookery Waters is going through an expansion with a new lake being dug and a tackle shop being built on-site.  Access to Magpie lake has been improved with a road available to drop off your gear. The Draw Orderly queue and hands in to the plastic bag with the milk carton tops for our pegs... Peg 23 came out for me... the same peg that I had drawn the previous year .  Funny enough, Ricky also drew the same peg as he fish

With Mark now 4 points down we return to Rookery Waters, Pidley which could be classed as Mark's home water where he has grabbed some large bags pleasure fishing so the pressure was on me to try and beat him today... We had tried to contact the owners to request permission to use keepnets but could not get through to them in time.  We arrived and found that a match would be on Magpie lake and the peg that Mark wanted to fish was in the match... We took a walk round and decided to fish pegs 31 & 32 which would not interfere with any of the match lads.  The weather was taking a turn for the worse with high winds and rain predicted for the afternoon, so all the wet weather gear came out! We decided to zero our scales with a wet landing net and would weigh each fish, rounding up and down the weight of the fish and clicking away our weights.  It was a good way to figure out who wins at the end of the day. The Set-up I had a method chuck to the reeds, so the method rod was

The fish were busy with each other! It was another early start from London, 5:30am to be on the road for 6am... The drive up to Pidley in Cambridgeshire was easy given the time so I arrived at the Mad Cat Pub for our breakfast gathering with plenty of time to spare.  Colin Mercer was already at the pub car park having stayed over after a two day event close by.  The weather was glorious and there had been talk that the carp had been spawning on the saturday which made the fishing tough going for those competing with weighs well done on the normal 100-200lb bags! We all arrived at the fishery, lucky for Colbrad we caught him up on the famers path into the fishery and he looked a little bit lost but was soon in the convey to the car park.  Everyone unpacked their gear and we all head down to Magpie lake for the draw.  The fish were indeed spawning again and all you could hear was splashing of fish chasing each other and the slurping noise that car make in the margins... it was an a

Mark at Peg 8 on Magpie Up to Cambridge for the weekend to resume the mini competition between Mark and myself .  Venue choice today was Rookery Waters in Pidley and Magpie lake , Mark's home waters. The temperature reading was 12 degrees C, winter conditions calling for winter tactics, so we would have to be patient for bites. Mark selected peg 8 which had a short cast to the island and reeds in front of him. I chose Peg 9 to his left and had the left edge of the island and an over hanging tree and plenty of open deeper water, also the sun was on this side, so a little warming from the sun couldn't harm.  I felt that the fish would be in the deeper water given the temperature. It was also slightly tactical as the peg to the right of Mark, peg 7, didn't have much of a feature to cast to.  My peg would eliminate Mark having a larger area to cast too... it is a competition after all ;-) The Set-up My home for the day, Peg 9 Both of us were set up in no tim

Heading back to Rookery Waters we decided to fish Rook Water after Mark had previous success with some early season Tench. We both decided to fish on the right hand side of the lake at pegs 24 & 25 . The weather was pretty cold and a chilled wind soon started to blow across our pegs.  I hooked a nice ghost carp of about 2lb from the off, followed by a roach. Mark was having trouble keeping his waggler in the swim and took an early decision to move to the opposite corner of the lake, peg 16.  I decided to try and fish out my chosen swim and soon switched to the feeder.  The fish turned on and I landed three carp in quick sucession.  The action died, and now Mark was consistently getting fish on the feeder.  His choice to move was a good one! I was landing one fish to every couple that Mark was getting.  Our banter/abuse continued via mobile phone. I decided to drop in my margin rig with a piece of corn.  The float bobbed and I landed a nice roach of around 10o

I had been watching a Bob Nudd video and at the same time, Mark had heard about Rookery Waters in the village of Pidley.  So we decided to fish Magpie Lake at Rookery Waters . There are three lakes at Rookery Waters, Rook, Magpie and Jay.  After speaking to the owner the night before we were told there was a small match on Magpie but we could still fish it, so pegs 9 & 10 were selected, again with an island to fish to. We arrived at first light, paid for our ticket in the honesty box and set off to the pegs.  It was pretty cold and the pegs we had selected were facing the wind, which was not the best omen... Again, I chose to use the pole as my main line of attack and Mark went for the two rod option, Carp Rod on buzzer and waggler approach. The going was very slow to start with very little coming on the short pole line.  Infact it took about an hour to get the first fish, a little roach.  Mark wasn't having much luck either... that was until his carp road went of
