Lindholme Angling Club Festival - Lindholme Lakes, 10th June 2016

Final day...  If I would have a good result today I could make it to the top 5!  I think I piled a bit too much pressure on myself to be honest and today would test me. The Draw Peg 2, Bonsai.  Not an area I had ever fished before and I had some good anglers in my section so it was all to play for.  Neighbours for the day where Stuart and Bradley 'Steady' Smith Set-Up Pole only, initially although I would break the rod out later in the day.  Another day fishing longer as it was 16 metres to the far bank and 15 metres to my right margin line. All-In I figured that the bread working the other day it would also work on Bonsai so I prepared some discs before the all in.  With that and the whistle I started across on the far bank working the bread along the margins.  The action wasn't instant in fact it took some time before the first fish was in the net infact the first fish went to Brad who was fishing short. Before long Brad followed me over and we had a race for

The Wednesday night normally has another name that is way too rude to publish here.  Lets just call it an evening of much drink and merriment!  We headed into Epworth and the local curry house The Draw There were 3 pegs left in the bag, one of which was a flyer... Peg 20, Beeches.  Gary gave me the tips on how to fish it and also piled the pressure on saying that I should win the lake from there! Set-Up The plan was simple... 16.5 metres across under the trees and a margin line.  That was it! I set-up 3 duplicate rigs for across as I could foresee danger under the trees and one margin rig.  The across rigs would be banded pellet or worms. All-In Straight across to the far side kinder potting in micro's and working the rig.  No signs or indications for 10 minutes which was worrying.  Eventually that familiar waft of the float and first fish on! Gary's advice after hooking a fish under the tree's was to bury the pole tip and ship back straight away to avoid get

After the tough day on Willows I headed back to the lodge and bumped into Nathan.  We had a couple of cheeky beers on the terrace which turned into one monster night after all the other lads arrived back.  Pizza was ordered again and hangovers would ensue in the morning! Lesson Learnt, feed Nathan Stella as he just cannot cope with the stuff ;-) The Draw As I was on Willows yesterday, today it's my turn on Laurels.  Peg 13 came out of the bag, an area that isn't noted to be great... with Brian P again opposite. Set-up The peg has a great margin, so the pole lines were: 16 metres to margin 13 metres straight ahead Top 2 and 2 margin right Today I added some bread to the bait list to dob and waft along the margins All-in Straight onto the dobbing line down the margins kinder potting micro pellets topped with groundbait.  It only took 5 minutes for the first fish to take the bait.  I worked this line for the first two hours of the match eventually moving to 16 m

Another night of banter in the bar and an equally unhealthy evening meal from the nearest take away and for a change no hangover for me this morning. The Draw Today we would be on either Willows or Laurels.  Peg 24 on Willows was my home for the day an area I'd not drawn before.  The weather was oppressively hot, with very little wind resulting in no ripple on the water. Set-Up Getting to the peg I had stick ups right in front of me, so I fished them out with a weed cutter.  I didn't break out any rods and opted for a pole only attack with lines at 13 metres and 6 metres both with options at 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock. One shallow rig just in case, other rigs at full depth. All-In The pole lines at 10 o'clock would be fed heavily, the other lines negatively via the kinder pot... I was already sunburnt from the previous day.  Today would be no exception weather wise. I worked the negative lines for an hour with very little reward expect a few skimmers.

Day 1 of the Lindholme Angling Club 5 day festival, formerly the Maggotdrowners festival. Arriving on the Sunday afternoon it was great to catch up with the lads and to meet some new faces as the numbers of anglers had swelled to 50 taking part. Last nights entertainment was mainly around my “special friend” Mr Bennetto who apparently is now the “king of tinder”, read into that what you like… Dinner consisted of a chinese order from the only place that would deliver on a Sunday.  I must now make an immediate apology to Nathan as I took all the orders from the lads and forgot to call him to see if he wanted some food too... sorry mate! Our accommodation had improved significantly this year with the addition of the lodges.  Wow, luxury, comfort and a decent show!  Thanks Keith! We ended the evening having some beers with my lodge mates, Neilly, Sir Len and Ecky. The Draw Peg 41 close to the tackle shop which gave me a chuck to the island.  Neighbours for the day, Ian and Al

Final day and we would be back on Bonsai.  A fish and chip night saw the local chippy being swamped with a massive order.  A few beers in the bar and an early night for some. Young Ryan was involved in the the 3 man lift, it can be found on Facebook somewhere. This is one of Nathan's party tricks and most new comers fall for it!  Ryan was in a position to win the festival yesterday, but he had set up on the wrong peg along with other misdemeanors was awarded 4 points instead of his section win.  It was all to play for as a number of anglers could win the festival. The Draw An earlier draw today so that people could get away earlier.  Peg 67 would be my lot for the day. Paul N had won the lake from this peg on Day 1.  I had Steve, Juzzy, Young Ryan and Paul N in my section today... a pretty tough section! Set-Up Again, the spirit of the festival came through with Paul N telling me exactly what he had done on day one, despite being in the same section as me.  Thanks m

Day 4 and after two section seconds and one section fourth I was doing ok in the standings, just ok mind you... A great night in the clubhouse with the lads and Neil with the game of killer taking ages on the pool table that we were quite late to bed!  The most amusing part of the night was Neil eating a £10 note that Juzzy was trying to bet with... The lads where rolling around laughing as Neil was chomping away on it to finally re-gurgitate it and give it back to Juzzy... The Draw Peg 13 on Beeches. A new lake to me both Beeches and Loco were in the draw and the promise of large fish was beckoning today. Peg 13 has a great right hand margin line with around 20 inches of depth and a nice platform for the fish to dine from. The spirit of the festival shone through today with Bigun coming over and telling me how to fish the peg, when to put the groundbait in and when to finally put a double worm over the groundbait. With no worms, Bigun came over with a handful of worms for m

Day 3 after a night in the curry house with the lads, luckily I offered to drive so had a very clear head this morning, others didn't fair so well today.  Again we would be drawing pegs from both Willows and Laurels, so I could be on the same peg if my unlucky drawing hand pulled it out again. The weather was definitely better, with some wind, causing ripple and it was overcast. The Draw Peg 52 Willows would be the home for the day.  A peg I've never fished before, so I was looking forward to the challenge. Set-up Pretty much open water ahead, with stick-ups to my right which ruled out the margin line. Luckily the left hand margin had been trimmed and was looking tempting. Fish were crashing about spawning to my far left so I set up a method rod to try and get over to them. Pole lines were: Top 2 and 2 Top 4 and 2 full depth and a shallow rig Margin on the left  Bait for the day was a before, fishery pellets and corn. All in Kindering in a ball of micro p

Day 2 and the sun was shining, it would be a hot day!  In the back of my mind was my Mum reminding me to put on the factor 30, sorry Mum, I left it at home ;-) After such a big night after arriving, Monday night was a bit quieter which helped everyone in the morning as there were some fresh faces rather than hung over ones! Today we would be drawing to fish either Willows or Laurels and again tomorrow the draw would be both lakes pegs in the bag. The Draw Peg 40 Willows, I’d been here before on the festival, in fact last year... Set-Up  Pole only today so: Top 2 + 2 14 metres at full depth and shallow Stick-ups to my right Fishery Pellets, dead reds and corn again as bait. All-In While I was setting up I noticed a lot of activity in the stick ups to my right, so at the all in I decided to put a bait straight in the area.  As I was laying the rig in the elastic came out of the pole and a fish was on within 20 seconds of the all-in... thats a first. I took another

Day 1 of the festival, it was a late night after arrival at Lindholme Lakes.  Almost a full bottle of rum gone in the lodge and some very sore heads.  Colin is missing this year and it shows as there is no-one to look after his mate Tony.  Tony was looking very sorry for himself.at the draw.  Come back Col, all is forgiven! The Draw Two discs stuck together coming out of the bag, breaking them apart, peg 46 on Bonsai. Set-Up No edge line on Peg 46, but I had an island to go at and some open water. The method rod came out and was clipped up to the right hand edge of the island. Pole lines were at 5 metres and 13 metres full depth and shallow. All-In Kinder potting in some pellets on the 5 metre line to see if I could grab an early mug fish as there was plenty of swirling there while setting up. At 15 minutes it was clear that I was going to be able to mug one so I switched to the method feeder. The rod tip soon ripped round and a small angry F1 was in the net. After 45 mi

The final day of the festival and I needed a good result to beat my previous years position on the festival.  My weights were down this year which wouldn't help.  We would be back on Bonzai today, the British summer has really settled in and it was looking like being a scorching day! The Draw An earlier draw today with an earlier finish to allow those travelling to get home.  Peg 17 would be my home today, almost next to the road out of lindholme! The Set-Up I had an island chuck for the method feeder, as the island was a little over 16 metres away.  The right hand margin was very tempting with plenty of fish activity so that would be a target, I also put in a 5 metre line that would be fished with meat or corn. The All-In Potting in on the 5 metre line and priming the right hand margin it was straight onto the method feeder tight to the island.  I took 5 fish with the first 5 casts.  The day was looking good!  Next cast was a "squirrel" cast, straight in the t
