Maggotdrowning - Lindholme Lakes, 2nd May 2013

A beautiful day awaited the whole of the field, blue skies, sunshine, but very little wind, which of course meant no ripple on the water.  The previous night was a big night for the lads with two lodges worth of booze consumed, this of course resulted in some very soar heads in the morning. The Draw Peg 43 came out of the drawbag for me.  This peg is at the top end of the lake in a bay on the left handside with a very short walk from the car.  Arriving at the peg the water was dead calm and there were a few carp lazing about just under the surface. The Set-up On my left I had a long margin swim but was restricted on my right handside margin with a tree in the way.  I brought out a method feeder and pellet waggler rod just in case but the main pole lines were as follows: 14 metre left hand margin swim 14 metre in open water straight ahead 8 metre left hand margin swim top 2 right hand margin swim (at my feet) Bait options were sweetcorn, luncheon meat, 4 & 6mm expa

So far my best performance in a maggotdrowing festival so I was keen to do well again today.  The bar was shut last night, so we had a few drinks in the cabins but it was a pretty early night for all concerned and as such, not too many rough faces in the morning.  Overnight it had been quite chilly but the weather was being good to us all with bright sunshine. The Draw I drew out peg 27, which is on the top left hand corner of Oasis, giving me plenty of options. The Set-up As Oasis is a snake lake, it is an all out pole venue, but I set up a method feeder rod just in case.  The pole lines were as follows: 15 metres to the bottom of the far shelf, straight ahead, 2 o’clock and 3 o’clock lines 16 metres on the shelf, the same lines as the 15 metres 8 metre track line, straight ahead and 2 o’clock Top 2 for the keepnet line Bait was sweetcorn for hookbait as it hadn’t let me down so far this week, dampened micros, 6mm hard pellets for pinging across, meat and hemp. Day 2 and not many hangovers from the Monday night apart from the party boys cabin who apparently were up until 3am... Although they didn’t look too bad after a night of merriment!  Willow lake is generally a square lake with a number of legs going into the centre of the lake, looking at it from an aerial view is is almost like to ‘W’s.  The point on these legs are the sought after pegs. A big thanks to Keith (Shallowman), who lent me his Tricast Trilogy so I could use his number 5 section to replace the one I broke yesterday... it was a life saver and greatly appreciated.  Thanks Keith! The Draw As most anglers who read this blog will know the draw queue is normally a hand diving fest!  I reached into the bag and pulled out Peg 35 which was in the bay at the top of the lake.  It has an aerator straight ahead at around 16 metres which is an obvious target area. The Set-up Willows tends to be a lake suited to the pole and as such I set-up the following: 13 metre pole line t

The annual fish-in with the Maggotdrowning crewe to Lindholme Lakes in Doncaster.  A five day festival with the “usual suspects”.  I arrived on the Sunday and had a quick practice on the Loco lake which taught me absolutely nothing to be honest.  Most of the lads from last years festival where here and the abuse soon started, especially my nickname of, “Why Lee, Why”.  The weather wasn’t too bad, sunny day but the wind was gusting very heavily. The Draw 9am draw, fish 11m through to 5pm, plenty of time to set-up and a decent 6 hour match.  We had plenty of of room with only 24 fishing, four sections of six people on Bonsai lake.  Bonzai is the jewel in Lindholme Lakes’s crown and everyone looks forward to fishing it. The hand drop in the bag and I drew out peg 75, so I would be on the middle leg on the right hand side, wind would be over my back hopefully making it an easier day than most. The Set-up Definitely a bit guilty of setting up a little bit to much gear today

Tees Valley Lakes, Urlay Nook Road, 20th April 2013

The weather this week had started to improve so I decided to stay local and have another visit to Tees Valley Lakes near Yarm.  The previous session at this venue threw up some great roach and I wanted to bag some more of these silver beauties and hopefully some of the venues carp too.  I arrived at the fishery at 7:30am after cleaning the frost off the car, hoping that a cold overnight snap wouldn't affect the fishing too badly.  I was the only angler fishing so I had the choice of pegs, so decided to fish peg 7 which gave me the point of the island and also open water.  Before I arrived at the venue I decided not to take any rods so it would be a pole only day. The Set-Up 3 pole lines all at 13-14 metres: To the point of the island by the reeds To the left side of my swim, again to the reed Open water to the right of the island I had heard that chopped worm was working well so I took some casters, red/white maggots and worms. The Session Learning from the pr

Peg 24, right on the bend A match organised by Neil (ns69) via the Match Fishing Scene website with points counting towards the MFS Champions League at a venue I've been to a few times over the years, Lawn Farm Fisheries near Cambourne in Cambridge.  There was a good turn out of 20 anglers and it was great to see some familiar faces as well as meeting some new guys.  Today we would be fishing Honeysuckle, the snake lake. The Draw The normal non-orderly queue appeared around Neil and Neilo as they started the draw.  I drew out peg 24 which is in a good area of the lake.  Meanwhile, Mark drew peg 40 and his walk was literally 6 steps to his peg.  The Set-Up Feed every drop in, very little! Arriving at the peg I was very happy to see that I was on the bend and as the pegging was very generous I had a lot of far bank reeds to target.  Honeysuckle is primarily a pole venue, but I decided to set up a bomb rod to help explore the peg just in case the wind got

Kingsland Reservoir, Coates, 19th March 2013

My final day in Cambridge with Mark and the venue for today's competition was to be Decoy Lakes in Whittlesey but we changed our mind while grabbing sandwiches from the local supermarket, so drove to Kingsland Reservoir in Coates, just round the corner from Decoy Lake.  The last time we visited Kingsland was back in February 2012 . We had a wander round the small carp lake and decided to fish two middle swims giving us both an aerator as a fish holding area and as it was a Tuesday we had the entire lake to ourselves. The Set-Up We decided that today's match would be slightly different and that it would be a rod only affair, no poles.  so I set up the following rods: 10' Bomb Rod with in-line Method Feeder 10' Bomb Rod with a running bomb rig 13' Waggler Rod The All-In The aerator was the obvious target for the first cast, Mark also had the same idea so out went a small method feeder to the right of the target.  My plan was to leave this out for an hou
