A text message from Hathers asking whether I could fish the Wednesday OBH Lovers match for Big Si.  Not a problem, bait sorted, long ranger feeder rods sorted and I was ready to visit one of my favourite venues, Old Bury Hill in Dorking with the "knobs". Todays weather was miserable, rain and wind however the rain as predicted to stop around 10am so maybe it could be a great day for the bream. The Draw Peg 1, one of the favoured pegs came out of the bag for me.  Normally Big Si draws this peg and he has on most occasions however a few weeks ago it didn't produce for him with Pegs 2 and 3 taking the match win and section first. It does look a beautiful peg however the overhanging tree on the pole line doesn't allow you to get up close and personal with the reeds.  The long chuck across an obvious target. Set-up The pole line at 13-14 metres to target the tree line.  I was surprised at the difference in depth between peg 1 as I grabbed a rig that I had used

A late call went out on the OBH Lovers group on Bookface that there was a spare place on the match.  A quick phone call to Hathers and I'd secured the spot fishing as replacement for Steve Parkin. The Draw 8:15am draw, I arrived around 8am to find the front bank parking full. The lads were obviously keen today! Peg 3 for me today. Set-up After watching Greg an Simon casting out a very long way to clip up their rods I followed suit.  After clipping up I marked out the distance on the measuring sticks at 70 metres! I set-up a bomb and pellet rod at this distance that would have a t-bag of pellets with it.  I also set-up a feeder rod at 25 metres, just beyond the pole line. A single pole line at 13-14 metres at the 1 o'clock position to avoid bring fish on the feeder line over it with a light 0.4g rig and heavier 0.8g rig if the wind got up. Bait was pellets, dead maggot and sweetcorn.  Groundbait, F1 Dark. All-In The weather today was screaming Bream!  Overcast

Back to the Lake of Breams that is Old Bury Hill, the main lake and a match that Hathers had organised for the OBH Lovers and serving as a practise for the Wednesday series that he runs. Bury Hill is a beautiful fishery and the weather was being very kind also. I'd popped down a few days earlier when Hathers was having a practise for the practise session and learnt quite a lot from him, Mickey D and Ricky Baxter. The Draw The draw finally got under way after Hathers realised that Mickey D wasn't fishing today.  Fourteen of us spread across pegs 1-20 with the higher number pegs the ones people wanted.  My draw for today, unlucky for some, peg 13. Now I've been to peg 13 last time I fished in August last year, you can find that article here... Neighbour for the day was Silvers. Set-up I have the end of the big island in front of me which of course is a natural draw for fish so I set up two 13 foot rods as follows, both clipped up at 65, 70 and 75 metres: 1.5

A facebook post from Hathers looking for some volunteers for the Wednesday retiree, self employed and builders match at Old Bury Hill made me put in a day of unpaid leave, its just too good a place to miss and the fishing was reportedly very good. Arriving at the fishery it was raining and quite overcast, given our summer, rain was last thing on my mind. The Draw We all gathered round the cabin jostling for position.  Eventually my turn and peg 13 would be my home for the day.  Neighbours Hathers and Shedders, so plenty of friendly abuse to be had. Set-up My initial thoughts given the wind blowing across the peg was to sack the pole and just fish the rods. Choice of rods were: 12' Bomb and tea bag clipped up at 50 metres 12' Method, also clipped up at 50 metres 10' Method around 20 metres I was setup very quickly and the weather was clearing so plenty of time to get the pole out and setup a line at 14metres. Bait was mainly pellet and groundbait however I

A Friday off work and a chance to have a pleasure session at Old Bury Hill Fisheries with Nathan and his Dad, John.  Button came along for the day too, she does really like birds which was to become apparent later in the day ;-) I'd phoned the fishery and they had mentioned that the sport was good with plenty of bream coming out. The Draw We had 3 pegs next to each other, two with an island chuck and the other left of the island.  John picked his peg, Nathan took the end of the island peg and I ended up on Peg 34, I think. Set-up I'd decided that it would be a rod only day for me so I left the pole and all the other paraphernalia at home.  Two rods, one feeder and one waggler. Bait wise was dead simple, maggots, pellets (hard 6mm/8mm) and groundbait. All-In Nathan and John opted to fish two rods at once to try and snare an OBH carp.  They also fished a method feeder each. 24 fish of this quality, a great day! I had my 10 foot bomb rod that could reach the i

MFS Pairs - Bury Hill Fisheries, 5th October 2016

Peg 36 A blind pairs MFS match at Bury Hill Fisheries organised by Terry Swan was too good to resist.  My partner for the day would be Pat Pritchard who I'd had a cheeky practise session with the previous week, the blog of that day can be found here .  I was feeling good for the day ahead. An early start from London to meet Hathers and Spindle for breakfast in Dorking and then onto the fishery to catch up with all the lads, quite a few who I'd not met before, especially Skimmerman (Kev), who has just qualified to fish in Serbia for the England Disabled Squad. Kev needs a bit of support to get him there and a JustGiving page has been set up so if you can donate, please do by following this link . A text message from Pat letting me know that he'd broken down on the M25 was disastrous.  The diagnosis for the car was bent valves which sounds a bit terminal.  So a random partner from the other bank was picked for me, this turned out to be Spindle! The Draw We'd

A upcoming match at Bury Hill Fisheries I decided that a bit of practise was required.  After all, my last session here was over a year ago and I didn't do very well at all. The match will be a pairs event and Pat Pritchard is my partner for the day.  A quick call to Pat and he was available to come on down for the day too.  Pat's a bit of a good angler having just wining the MFS Champion's league final so any advice from Pat would definitely help come match day. The Peg Pat arrived a bit earlier than and headed down to Peg 40 so when I got there I picked Peg 41 with plenty of open water in front of us both. The lines I intended on fishing would be the feeder line, long and middle distance and a couple of pole lines at 14.5 metres, 10 O'clock and 2 O'clock both fed slightly differently. Bait for the day.  Expander and hard pellets (4mm and 6mm), dead red maggots and sweetcorn including a mix of fishmeal and special G Green groundbait. The Session The i

I put my name well down the reserve list for this match at Bury Hill Fishery not really expecting to get on it.  A late message from Hather's last week asking if I was available?  Of course I was, Bury Hill is a beautiful fishery and having only been here once before I was looking forward to getting back on the banks of the big lake. Arriving at the fishery it was great, as usual to see some faces I've not seen for a while, like Simon (Big Bloke) and Stuart (Squeaky Roller). Ken in the tackle shop was quick to pick up on the northern accent and the friendly banter started. The Draw Hather's wasn't fishing today as his good lady had put her foot down.  He was going to the football and then having a week at Stafford Moor.  This didn't stop him turning up and organising the draw for us all. My peg for the day would be Peg 11, a disabled platform swim which of course I would soon be ridiculed for.  Thanks to Hathers for eventually getting a picture of me after

Peg 30 Bury Hill Fisheries is one I've heard about a lot.   Russ Evans, The Obsessed Angler used to be the head bailiff with plenty of videos to be found on YouTube .  I was looking forward to this match where the main species to target is Bream.  I contacted Russ to get an idea of how to approach Bury Hill and he gave me some good advice about the pegs, what groundbait to feed and to be prepared to chase the bream further out as they tend to back off. Arriving at the fishery I was greeted by Ken who had obviously been set up by the southern lads.  As I walked into the tackle shop Ken says, "I'm sorry mate but it's Sunday and there is a problem", I responded, "What is the problem mate?", he says, "Yeah, Sunday and no Northerner's allowed to fish on a Sunday"... brilliant craic!  I'll thanks Brian Green (Proper Tidal Boy on MFS) for that one! ;-) The Draw George was sorting all the lads out in his usual no-nonsense style I d
